Since joining Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum in 2023, Executive Director, Molly Carrott Taylor, and her team have infused the museum with fresh vision. Their passion for sharing Savannah’s maritime history and its unique stories fuels the team’s vision to take the museum to new horizons. The women of Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum are part of Savannah magazine’s Women in Business special advertising section in the May/June 2026 issue, which highlights female professionals who are shaping Savannah’s business landscape. Here, Carrott Taylor shares more about her team’s work and what drives them.
OUR MISSION: To share our amazing maritime collection and the William Scarbrough House and its gardens with everyone.
OUR MOTTO: “Fair winds and following seas!”
I ADMIRE WOMEN WHO: Do an awesome job and keep their sense of humor ready at all times.
OUR TOOLS OF THE TRADE: So many great designers, thoughtful historians, and creative types working on new and fabulous projects — like carving topiary waves into our bushes in 2027!
I’VE LEARNED THE HARD WAY THAT: Life is too short; enjoy the ride.
OUR REAL JOB DESCRIPTIONS: We do it all and have fun while we are at it.
MY LOCAL HEROINE: Former Savannah Morning News Executive Editor Rexanna Lester, one of our very best and most dedicated supporters.
THE SECRET TO GOOD BUSINESS IN SAVANNAH: Having an awesome team.
I LEAD BY: Getting in the trenches with them.
BEST BUSINESS ADVICE I EVER RECEIVED: My Columbia University graduate school professor told me 20 years ago: “A nonprofit is a business — run it that way.”
YOU’D NEVER GUESS THAT: We are such a small but scrappy group, making new and wild things happen at Ships of the Sea.
I HOPE MORE WOMEN WILL: Visit Ships of the Sea and discover what a cultural hub we are!
